40 ha of new forests established under the project

Project activities for restoration of damaged priority habitats in Dragoman and Plana Natura 2000 sites are successfully completed.

In April 2015 all planned habitat restoration activities in project target area were successfully completed. Since the start of restoration works in 2013 a total of 40 ha new forests were planted under the project in the 2 target Natura 2000 sites falling within the territory of State Forestry Unit Sofia. The overall area of restored priority habitat type 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens is 36.7 ha and the area of restored priority habitat type 91E0* Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior is 3.3 ha.

For habitat restoration were used seedlings produced in Lokorsko nursery from the reproductive material collected under the project from selected basic forest stands in Natura 2000 sites. During the reforestation works we made every possible effort to support the natural restoration process in forest ecosystem by using combination of 13 native tree species that were planted in groups according to the specific terrain and conditions in each reforestation site.

Every year since 2013 our newly planted forest were taken care of (including cultivation and replacement of dead seedlings) and these activities will continue till expected project end in June 2015.
